All three of France’s competitors in the event failed to qualify, but it is Ammirati’s big regret that will crush the host nation and its 68 million patriotic fans.

The 21-year-old seemed to take the hit hard with his face wincing as he landed on the mat.

Fortunately for the junior world champion he is not alone. Japanese pole vaulter Hiroki Ogita made international headlines at the Rio Games in 2016 when he also got his tackle in the wrong position during one of his attempts.
