Elle Fanning admitted she couldn’t help but laugh at some of the absurd moments filming the sizzling scenes for the Channel 4 series The Great, alongside Nicholas Hoult who play Catherine’s husband Peter III.
Elle added that she and Nicholas both took the same approach to filming sex scenes having entered acting at a young age, with an intimacy co-ordinator also on hand during filming.

Speaking about the raunchy scenes, Elle said wasn’t surprised to see them form such a large part of her character, given Catherine is historically known for her liberal and experimental exploits.
She told The Sun: ‘Sex is a really big part of the show. Mostly those scenes I have are with Nick and I’m so comfortable with him.
‘Also, a lot of it was so outrageous that we would just laugh through it.’
Elle explained that an intimacy co-ordinator was on hand during filming for the series to ensure both she and Nicholas were comfortable with the sex scenes.

The Maleficent star added that she believes her character is forced to make some difficult choices in her bid to rule over Russia.

Currently she is spending the coronavirus lockdown with her family and boyfriend Max Minghella, embracing the chance to spend more time with her loved ones.

Catherine The Great documents the early years of Catherine after marrying Peter and being crowned Empress of Russia.

The series revolves a fictionalised plot which sees Catherine plot to kill her husband and take over the throne.

In real life Catherine became Empress in 1762 after a coup successfully overthrew Peter from power, and under her reign Russia became one of the greatest powers in Europe.
Throughout her reign she chose never to remarry and died in 1796 after suffering a stroke.
