Ukrainian President’s Office Reacts to $100 Million Energy Corruption Scandal

The Office of the President responded to investigations by anti-corruption bodies into a scheme in the energy sector, through which, according to the investigation, about 100 million dollars were laundered. The president’s communications adviser, Dmytro Lytvyn, emphasized: there must be no impunity for anyone found guilty.

Lytvyn added that at the beginning there were only a few videos from NABU without legal details; as soon as they appear, the Office of the President will support other procedural actions.

A scheme of massive corruption in the energy sector

On November 10, NABU announced a large-scale operation “Midas” to uncover corruption in the energy sector, during which more than 70 searches were conducted.

According to investigators, the organizers of the scheme received up to 15% of the value of the state Energoatom contracts as illicit gains. Kickbacks were paid by counterparties, whom the scheme’s participants forced upon them.

Energoatom said that it fully cooperates with the investigation, facilitates a transparent inquiry, and provides all materials requested by law enforcement.

The agency released transcripts of conversations of the defendants with code names, and claims that the scheme included: “Roket”, who was an adviser to the former energy minister and is now the head of the Ministry of Justice, Herman Galushchenko; “Tenor”, who was the executive director for physical protection and security at Energoatom; a well-known businessman and four other people. In total they managed to launder 100 million dollars.
