A never-before-seen video from the Pentagon, the CIA and an obscure federal nuclear security agency shows a fake news broadcast of a terrorist attack on Indianapolis as part of an emergency training exercise dubbed ‘Mighty Derringer.’

The National Nuclear Security Administration, in coordination with the other top security and military agencies, created the video in 1986 to help prepare for the advent of a terror group threatening to detonate a nuclear bomb in a major American city.
Mighty Derringer was meant to also test the skills of NEST, the Nuclear Emergency Search Team, a highly trained group working within the Department of Energy.
NEST was created in 1974, but is still active today.
The video, which was obtained by Gizmodo through the Freedom of Information Act, shows a Channel 9 news anchor cut to a chopper cam of Indianapolis after the city is partially evacuated as authorities frantically search for a nuclear bomb planted by the fabricated terrorist group commanded by someone named ‘Gooch.’
There’s no mistaking the era of the recording from the 1980s mustache and hair cut of the broadcast reporter, Jeff Schwartz, no doubt a fictitious name for the actor in the simulation video.
The broadcast picks up on day four of the crisis.
‘Few details are available,’ Schwartz says. ‘But this much we know a large portion of downtown Indianapolis remains evacuated. Now reports are sketchy at this point but we do know that apparently there are terrorists holed up in the downtown part of our city with nuclear devices.’
The newsman then refers to the NEST team sweeping the frantic city for the bomb.
‘We have just learned here at the Channel 9 newsroom that a federal response team has been sent in to neutralize the threat,’ says before throwing the feed to a fake helicopter reporter, Anne Miller, flying over the city.
Documents unsealed by the National Security Archive provide the backstory for what happened after the broadcast ended
There’s a grainy overhead view of Indianapolis and the whirr of the fake chopper blades all but drown out Miller’s feed.
‘There are police down there in the streets making sure everyone stays out of town,’ she says.
Then the screen flashes white from what is presumed to be the bomb going off and her feed goes dead.
Schwartz orders the control room to ‘get on the two-way radio’ to see what’s happened to the chopper reporter.
He turns back to the camera and says, ‘Again I’d like to caution against over-concern’
An explosion can be heard in the background and he looks up before his own feed goes dead.
The backstory for the broadcast can be pieced together through documents previously declassified by the National Security Archive, a government transparency group.
The Mighty Derringer training program was inspired by another fake terror plot in 1986 in which an anonymous threat that a nuclear device would be detonated in Boston if the terrorist did not receive $200,000, according to unsealed records
Under the training exercise the terror group in Indianapolis also stole nuclear material in their native country of Montrev, a fictional version of Mexico.
Delta Force soldiers were sent in and retrieved that bomb before it exploded, but the team was not so successful in the Mid-Western city.
According to training records, a 20-square-block radius was destroyed and 900 people were killed, 800 injured.
