Chinese Drink Maker in Hot Water For Claim Their Coconut Milk Makes Breasts Grow
The Hainan-based Coconut Palm Groupβs ad, picturing voluptuous girls holding cans with the slogan βI drink from small to bigβ, has prompted public outrage on Chinese social media. The producer cancelled the commercial and replaced it with a call for womenβs empowerment.
The Hainan Coconut Palm Group has admitted that their canned coconut drink has noΒ breast-enlargement effect followingΒ a wave ofΒ online criticism ofΒ their controversial advertisement, instead claiming that their beverage makes curves bigger.
The clip, which featured several curvy women fooling aroundΒ in water and holding cans inΒ their hands, also had slogans reading βdrink one can every day, [your] curves will excite people, whiter and plumperβ, βI drink fromΒ small toΒ bigβ and βdrinking more coconut milk every day can make [your] breasts fullerβ, the South China Morning Post reports.

According toΒ the outlet, the misleading commercial triggered uproar onΒ the Chinese social network Weibo and prompted the districtβs Industrial and Commercial Bureau inΒ Hainan toΒ launch an investigation. In response toΒ the backlash, the drink producer not only backed outΒ of their key message inΒ the commercial, butΒ also released a new clip onΒ their website withΒ what could be described asΒ a feminist angle.
The creators illustrated the controversial βfrom small toΒ bigβ slogan withΒ visuals showing a schoolgirl, a teenager and a female student, voicing their commitment toΒ the coconut drink. The call βwhite, tender and plumpβ was changed to βwhite and tenderβ, withΒ a clearer reference toΒ the coconut.
This is not the first time that the Hainan-based manufacturer has come underΒ fire forΒ an ad promising that their drink brings something more thanΒ just refreshment. The South China Morning Post recalls that inΒ 2017, the company landed inΒ hot water forΒ a commercial forΒ their papaya juice withΒ a similar jingle: βwhen Iβm full ofΒ papaya Iβm ample-chestedβ.
