Vince McMahon steps down as WWE CEO, Stephanie McMahon is interim Chairwoman and CEO

Legendary wrestling promoter Vince McMahon announced Friday he’s giving up the reigns to his wrestling dynasty.

McMahon’s retirement comes amid an ongoing investigation into the former World Wrestling Entertainment chairman and CEO’s alleged sexual misconduct and infidelity.

McMahon has been embroiled in controversy after the Wall Street Journal revealed he agreed to pay more than $12 million USD in hush money over the past 16 years to four former employees he had alleged affairs with.

The 77-year-old and former face of the world’s largest pro-wrestling company will be succeeded by his daughter, chairperson and co-CEO Stephanie McMahon and co-CEO Nick Khan.

McMahon will remain the company’s controlling shareholder and said he’ll continue to support the company in whatever way he can.

“It’s been a privilege to help WWE bring you joy, inspire you, thrill you, surprise you, and always entertain you,” McMahon said in a statement. “I would like to thank my family for mightily contributing to our success.”

On Twitter, some fans seemed baffled at the turn of events. “I thought Vince McMahon would die before he retired,” one user wrote.
