Meta Agrees To $725 Mn Settlement In Cambridge Analytica Scandal
Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, has agreed to pay USD 725 million to settle a class action lawsuit stemming from the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal. The lawsuit accused the company of sharing users’ personal data with the political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica without proper consent.
As per reports, the settlement, which is the largest recovery ever achieved in a data privacy class action and the most Facebook has ever paid to resolve a private class action, was filed in the Northern District of California. It must still be approved by a judge. Meta has not admitted any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
In response to the settlement, a Meta spokesperson stated, “We pursued a settlement as it’s in the best interest of our community and shareholders. Over the last three years, we revamped our approach to privacy and implemented a comprehensive privacy program.”
The Cambridge Analytica scandal, which came to light in 2018, involved the harvesting of information from approximately 87 million Facebook users. The data was allegedly used for voter profiling and targeting political advertising, notably in connection with former President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.
This settlement is part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to address legal challenges related to its data privacy practices. In a separate case, the company agreed to pay up to USD 14 million to settle claims that it favored foreign workers over U.S. workers, highlighting the company’s broader legal and ethical challenges.
The settlement underscores the increasing scrutiny and legal pressures technology companies face regarding user data privacy and ethical practices.
