5 Facts About ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Star Astrid Berges-Frisbey
As one of the new faces in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Astrid Berges-Frisbey (who plays sexy mermaid Syrena) is about to hit the big time. So who is she, and what do you need to know about her?
1. She’s quadrilingual.
Barcelona-born Astrid speaks four languages: French, Spanish, Catalan, and English. Her mother is French and her father is Spanish. Since she only started learning English recently, she reportedly relied heavily on Pirates costar and fellow SpaniardPenelope Cruz (who knows all about learning a new language for a film role) for translation help.
2. English wasn’t the only thing she learned for Pirates.
In order to convincingly play a mermaid, Astrid took scubadiving lessons. Luckily, she didn’t have to deal with prosthetics or makeup when it came to her fishail – that was added in with CGI.
3. She just won an award at Cannes.
Astrid just won the Chopard Trophy, which is presented at the Cannes Film Festival. The award honors young up and comers who have potential in the film industry. The trophy was presented to her by Robert DeNiro, who is this year’s President of the Jury at the Cannes.
4. She’s very close to her sister.
Astrid has a six-year-old sister who loves mermaids, so she was thrilled when Astrid won the role of Syrena. The first time that her sister ever dialed the phone by herself was to call Astrid and ask her questions about the movie and her role.
5. Her next project is basically the opposite of Pirates.
Astrid just started filming an indie movie, El Sexo de Los Angeles, in – you guessed it – Los Angeles. The project will have her switching back to Spanish. Astrid has said that the movie might be a bit racy by U.S. standards.
