Late-show TV host Jimmy Kimmel was named Dildo’s honorary mayor, as the community is a local service district
ABC’s decision to cancel late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel’s Los Angeles-based show is reverberating on the other side of the continent, in a small Newfoundland community in Canada where the comedian is the honorary mayor.
“I can speak for all the people of the community of Dildo that we would certainly roll out the red carpet for him and he’d be welcome, same as he was if he still had … his television show,” said Todd Warren, the owner of George House Heritage Bed and Breakfast in Dildo, a small local service district located 99 kilometres from St. John’s.
The town caught the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host’s eye in 2019, when he began to feature it repeatedly on his show while also campaigning to become the town’s unofficial mayor.
Free Speech In U.S.
On Wednesday ABC announced it would stop airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Nexstar Media Group said it would stop airing the show on its 32 ABC affiliates. The moves were in reaction to Kimmel, who is also the show’s executive producer, accusing politicians of using conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s killing for political gain, and poking fun at President Donald Trump’s response to the killing.
During a recent monologue, Kimmel said the U.S. had hit “new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
“In between the finger-pointing, there was, uh, grieving,” said Kimmel.
“On Friday, the White House flew the flags at half-staff, which got some criticism, but on a human level you can see how hard the president is taking this,” he said, before cutting to a clip where Trump responded to reporters asking about how he was doing by pointing to construction going on at the White House. “This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.”
Freedom of speech
“It is terrible when you think about freedom of speech and that some political party who might be able to influence what or what not is on TV,” said Lynette Reid, who owns The Treasure Trove in South Dildo.
She’s worried about the situation, but added when she saw on the news that Kimmel’s show would not be on the air, it got her thinking.
“Well, Jimmy Kimmel’s got a fallback job, he can always come here and be our mayor,” she said.
As a local service district, Dildo does not have a mayor or town council, and in the summer of 2019 Kimmel learned there was a community named Dildo and decided he wanted to be its mayor.
“I was alerted to the existence of a place, maybe a magical place … It’s a real place in Newfoundland, Canada,” Kimmel said at the time.
In 2019, Kimmel put the community of Dildo, N.L. on the international stage, campaigning to become its unofficial mayor.
