As Gym Sex Tape Scandal Sparks Fiery Debate, Israeli Women Rally for Right to Privacy

Leaked footage of a personal trainer and female clients engaging in sexual relations at a central Israeli gym has sparked protests by women’s rights group Bonot Alternativa (Women Building an Alternative) on Friday, in solidarity with the women whose privacy was violated.

The videos were shared far and wide, igniting public discourse in Israel and fueling rumors and misinformation. “Distributing these videos is a sexual offense with devastating consequences that can lead to irreversible psychological harm and suicidal thoughts,” a statement from Bonot Alternativa reads. “Those who spread them are criminals.”

Holding signs that read “This isn’t gossip, it’s a crime” and “Sharing sexually explicit videos is sexual harassment,” dozens of protesters stood in Yavne’s Rogovin Square on Friday, according to Israeli news outlet N12.
The activists were there to call out the proliferation of leaked security footage from a gym in the city of Yavne, which shows female members having consensual sex with their personal trainer.

“Those who disseminate [the videos] are criminals,” the statement added, saying that “Those who watch and contribute to their circulation are complicit in a criminal act.”

“There is no room for moral judgment on these women’s actions, only on the crime committed against them,” the statement continued. “We call on the Israel Police to fulfill its duty and handle this case with severity.”

The news first broke last week when, according to Israeli news outlet Walla, a partner of one of the women involved in the scandal allegedly began distributing video footage which contained graphic images of a personal trainer from a local gym having sex with several women, some of whom were married.

It was not immediately clear how the man obtained the video footage, with conflicting reports saying it either came from a hidden camera or the gym’s security camera, which may have been hacked.

As reported by Walla, Yavne police officers then opened an investigation into possible criminal violations of Israel’s Privacy Protection Law. On Sunday, Channel 12 reported that the police had established a special cyber investigation team to track down the source of the hack.

According to the website for the country’s Privacy Protection Authority, surveillance systems that collect an individual’s identifying information, including security cameras, are classified as “databases” and therefore subject to Israel’s privacy laws and data security regulations.

Police have stressed to the public that even forwarding the video to another person is a violation of the law prohibiting the distribution of obscene materials.

On Thursday, Ynet reported that one of the woman had filed a complaint against the trainer, saying she had engaged in sexual relations with him at the gym under the assumption that the security cameras had been disconnected.
Despite the legal issues, as well as widespread calls not to violate the privacy of those involved, the footage exploded over social media, and with it rumors and misinformation.

According to a second report by Walla, outlandish stories quickly began circulating, including that the unnamed personal trainer had allegedly fled the country after one of the husbands with criminal ties put a bounty on his head.

There were also reports that some of the women’s partners had committed acts of extreme violence against their wives and girlfriends, including murder and knife slashing. It was also said that the gym had been set on fire.

So far, none of these stories have proven to be true, but they have only contributed to the Israeli public’s obsession with the sex scandal.

“Every few hours, I get a new message in my WhatsApp groups with horrifying stories that keep getting more extreme,” Meital, a Yavne resident, told Walla. “It’s impossible to tell what’s real and what’s complete fabrication.”

Alongside the speculation came an onslaught of memes and humorous responses to the incident that circulated across social media. But the women involved in the scandal, as well as their friends and families, say the leak is no laughing matter.

Some have come forward to share the psychological damage they are suffering from both the violation of their privacy and harsh online attacks. Walla reported that at least one woman says she had been falsely accused of being married, even though she has actually been divorced for years.

“I’m receiving hateful messages from people who recognized me from the video,” she said in an interview with Walla. “They’re spreading lies that I was a married woman cheating on my husband – an absolute lie. It’s tearing me apart. I just wish people would show a little more compassion and empathy.”

“Right now, I just want to focus on taking care of my children,” she said.

Also speaking to Walla, the woman’s sister called on the public to think twice before sharing the video or even commenting on someone else’s post.

“This could happen to anyone,” she said. “Imagine if this were your mother, your daughter, your sister – would you still react the same way?” she asked.

“There’s a real woman behind this video, with a family, with children. This is devastating.” she added.

Yavne’s small population size has created an extra level of humiliation, not only for the women who slept with the trainer, but for their friends and family as well.

In an interview with Walla, one of the relatives who recognized her aunt in the footage that was shared online said, “How can one describe the shame I felt when I saw the video?”

“Our family is devastated,” she continued. “People don’t understand the damage it has caused – it’s not just videos, it has destroyed entire families. Whoever spread these videos must be held accountable and go to jail. This is a cruel and merciless violation.”

On Sunday, the trainer spoke to the media for the first time since the scandal broke, though he did not reveal his identity. In a recorded conversation with Channel 12, he confirmed that he is in hiding and that like the women involved, his mental health is suffering. “I have been cursed, my life has been threatened, I get hate messages,” he revealed.”Even my 76-year-old parents have been cursed at and threatened.”

During the conversation, the trainer denied many of the details that have been reported in recent days. “We are talking about three relationships,” he claimed. “They were not married and I am single. This is a nightmare.”
“Just stop,” he demanded.
