Donald Trump’s eldest son and his team bribed homeless and socially vulnerable people in Greenland to record a ‘MAGA’ group video and appear in photos during a trip to the island this week, the Danish state broadcaster DR News has claimed.

Trump Jr. arrived in Greenland on Tuesday on what he has called a “personal day trip” during which no meetings with government officials were planned. The visit followed US President-elect Donald Trump’s voicing his intention to acquire the Danish-controlled territory.

The younger Trump later shared posts on X of himself surrounded by people wearing the iconic red ‘MAGA’ caps with the caption ‘Greenland loves America and Trump.’ A video clip showed people enjoying lunch with Trump Jr. at the Hotel Hans Egede in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, and expressing their wish for the island to become part of the US.

DR News has since reported that the people filmed in the video were offered a free meal in exchange for taking part in the publicity stunt.

The outlet said it has spoken to several people in Nuuk who reportedly recognized some in the group as being homeless.

“All they have to do is put on a cap and be in the Trump staff’s videos,” one of the Nuuk residents was quoted as claiming. “They are being bribed, and it is deeply distasteful,” the resident stated.

Several employees at the local Brugseni Nuuk store also confirmed to the outlet that Trump Jr.’s people walked around the street in front of the store, handing out MAGA caps and inviting people to a free lunch at the hotel, the sources said.

The incoming president has voiced his intention to acquire Greenland, claiming the island is an “absolute necessity” for US national security, and that he would not rule out using either military force or economic measures to this end.

The world’s largest island, which sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, Greenland is already home to a large US military base. The territory was granted home rule by Denmark following a referendum in 1979.

Greenland’s government has firmly rejected Trump’s plans, calling them “an absurd idea.” Denmark has also opposed the proposal.

The Danish government has rejected Trump’s suggestion to buy Greenland. Denmark’s King Frederik, the ceremonial sovereign of the European democratic monarchy, has even changed the national coat of arms to highlight Copenhagen’s claim to the island.

On Monday, the president-elect claimed that “the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA,’” as he shared another video which was published by a cap-wearing supporter of his bid to purchase the island.

Danish state broadcaster DR News has since reported that the ‘MAGA’ group filmed by Trump’s son were not authentic Trump supporters but are in fact homeless and socially vulnerable people. They were allegedly offered a free meal in exchange for taking part in the publicity stunt, the outlet reported on Thursday, citing sources in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

The original ‘MAGA’ man, who the president-elect showcased on social media on Monday, has been identified by local media as a convicted marijuana trafficker. Timmy Zeeb, the reports said, was sentenced to four years in jail for his role in one of largest cannabis busts in the island’s history.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev argued on Thursday that the flurry of territorial claims made by Trump involving other nations, as well as the provocative gestures by his close associates, are a smokescreen. King Frederik of Denmark has introduced a redesigned royal coat of arms to more prominently feature Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The change came after US President-elect Donald Trump expressed an interest in gaining control over Greenland.

In the old design, Greenland and the Faroe Islands in the Northeast Atlantic, the two self-governed parts of the Kingdom of Denmark, shared the same field out of four in the royal coat of arms. The updated version, released last week, shows a polar bear and ram – animals that symbolize the two territories respectively – being given their own field each.

“The King wishes, by making changes to the royal coat of arms established in 1972, to create a contemporary royal coat of arms that both reflects the Commonwealth and takes into account history and heraldic tradition,” reads a statement published by the Danish royal family on New Year’s Day.

The statement makes no reference to Trump’s stated plans.

The ‘Danish Commonwealth’ refers to the constitutional status of the relationship between Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. It is home to a large US military base and is located on the shortest route from North America to Europe. The territory gained home rule from Denmark in 1979.

During his first term, Trump repeatedly expressed his intention to purchase Greenland, referring to it as “a large real estate deal.”

In December, Trump renewed his intent, stating on his social media platform Truth Social: “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”

Shortly after the statement, the Danish government announced a huge boost in defense spending for the island, which despite being larger than Mexico is home to fewer than 57,000 permanent residents.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede responded by saying “we are not for sale.”

Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., is expected to arrive in Greenland on a private visit on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Greenland’s significance has increased because of its rich natural resources, including rare earth minerals, and its key position in the Arctic. As climate change makes the Arctic more accessible, the region’s potential for resource exploitation and emerging shipping lanes has drawn heightened attention from global powers including Russia, China, and the United States.
