On Sunday, November 16, a large protest took place in Manila: hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to demand that those involved in the corruption scandal in flood-control projects, involving local officials and lawmakers, be punished.

According to police, about 550,000 participants gathered in the capital.

Public anger in the Philippines had grown since July, when President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in a national address, announced a corruption scandal that erupted after prolonged floods in the country.

According to the investigation, the matter concerns government flood-control projects that turned out to be of poor quality or not implemented at all. Private contractors are accused of embezzling funds through fake projects or constructing low-quality infrastructure in areas currently experiencing natural floods.

As the whistleblowers claim, some lawmakers received kickbacks from construction companies.

Context and public reaction

Today’s rally, organized by an independent Christian church in the Philippines, was the largest since nationwide protests in the wake of this scandal. The event followed two typhoons that claimed the lives of more than 250 people.

Meanwhile President Marcos Jr. pledged that many senators, members of Congress, and businessmen implicated in corruption would be behind bars by Christmas. He noted that the independent fact-finding commission, established at the start of the year, has already filed charges against 37 suspects.

Public pressure and protests will continue until there are transparent and effective steps from the authorities to punish the guilty and prevent similar schemes in the future.
