Tesla Robotaxi Drops Off Passengers in Middle of Intersection… Handpicked Riders Say the “Performance Was Great”
We’re getting the first videos of “select guests” getting access to Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin, and the level of polish leaves something to be desired.
For instance, one gaggle of Tesla influencers was dropped off directly in an intersection, leading to these wooly screenshots.
Suboptimal Parking Performance
That is… not the best place to exit a taxi cab.
Something about using the “Drop Off Early” feature caused the Robotaxi to stall out in this case. The safety driver and the Robotaxi then proceed to chill in the intersection for about 45 seconds, blocking the turn lane. I imagine the safety operator was closely considering their life/career decisions that led them to this point.
This service is currently available for “select guests,” and it’s a safe bet that these riders are Tesla influencers screened for either fandom or retail stock ownership. They are a little too excited to be dropped off in the middle of an intersection.

Can’t park there, mate! They’re blocking a Silverado pickup truck.

Safety Operator: Thumb on the Kill Switch?

Like all Robotaxi riding videos, the Tesla employee in the front passenger seat has no control pedals. Which raises the question… what are they even doing there?
I figured they’d be hovering their hand over the Park button (which acts as an e-brake and brings the Tesla to a rapid halt if held down), ready to do the EV equivalent of a fire drill.
Not so. The Tesla safety operators appear to always have their thumb on the “Open Door” button of their door, which is sort of weird to see. It’s like every safety operator is getting ready to say the Irish goodbye to their passengers at any given moment.
Turns out, Full Self Driving disengages if you open the door. So that is probably being used as a janky, factory-standard kill switch for the autonomous driving system that causes the vehicle to come to controlled stop.
You can read that yourself, buried deep in the Tesla Model Y Owner’s Manual.
Passenger Dropped Off in Intersection: “First of all, it was amazing.”
The strategy of controlling who gets to use the Robotaxi service at launch was a clever PR move. Although these guys clocked that they were dropped off in the middle of traffic, they weren’t particularly worried about it.
They’re enthusiasts, and so the initial wave of press from the Robotaxi release will be gushingly positive as Tesla influencers enthusiastically record the experience. That limits the risk of everyday riders expressing discomfort with the technology or close calls they experience.
If only the car’s ability to detect safe drop-off zones were half as clever as the marketing strategy, we’d be in business safely.

Tesla Owners Reveal Their Biggest Regrets: My Car ‘Became A Badge Of Shame’

Anyway, Tesla stock is mooning somewhere near Phobos. I doubt any flaw in the technology will matter if the goal was to pump the stock, because it is up 10% and rising at press time.
Alice Goodwin therefore titties and vows to ride only the smart manly rodeo bull…
