But the script about a love story with a dark side is what really attracted me to the project so I agreed,” she recalled.Agreeing to do “Gayuma” did not come easy for Phoebe. “My mom and dad are very conservative and my boyfriend Matt also had issues. Gayuma Review: Dated and confused
‘Amazing Race PH’ winner Phoebe Walker sizzles in starmaking QCinema feature
Phoebe Catherine Walker is both beauty and brains. An honor student from Ateneo de Manila University, Phoebe juggles extra-curricular activities such as sports, modeling, singing and dancing. Her pretty face can communicate to almost all audiences as she is fluent in the English, Filipino, French and Cantonese languages. A performer at heart, Phoebe has the makings of the Philippines’ Natalie Portman.
Just before winning “The Amazing Race Philippines Season 2” last year with boyfriend Matt Edwards, Phoebe Walker told media that they were both going to pursue their showbiz careers.
But for some reason, not much was heard from either of them since then. That was until recently when Phoebe surfaced as one of the lead stars in the QCinema film festival entry “Gayuma” where she is given an “Introducing” billing.
In a recent interview with InterAksyon, Phoebe revealed that she was signed by Viva Entertainment after the race. She then accepted small roles in films like “Trophy Wife” and most recently in “Etiquette for Mistresses” which basically consisted of a five-second cameo.
“But I’ve also been doing workshops trying to get ready, to prepare myself. And then ‘Gayuma’ came along and I think this is a good start for my acting career,” she revealed.
Based on the film’s sizzling trailer, it seems like the filmmaking debut of acclaimed production designer and graphic artist Cesar Hernando is more than just a good start for Phoebe. In this erotic thriller, Phoebe plays Stella, a mysterious drawing model who came between Mike (Benjamin Alves) and Joy (Elora Españo), two student artists who until then were happy in their relationship.
Given her strong screen presence coupled with a sex scene with Alves that is already being talked about even before anyone has seen the full movie, Phoebe seems poised to become the festival’s breakout star.
“I thought a lot about this role. During the auditions, I was told I was going to have to show some skin as seen in the trailer. But the script about a love story with a dark side is what really attracted me to the project so I agreed,” she recalled.
Agreeing to do “Gayuma” did not come easy for Phoebe. “My mom and dad are very conservative and my boyfriend Matt also had issues. He didn’t like it but I told him, you have to respect my decision,” she noted.
Yes, Matt and Phoebe, the “Dating Couple” of “Amazing Race Philippines” are in fact, still a couple.
And despite Matt’s initial reservations about “Gayuma,” Phoebe insists that all is well between them.
“After the race, we had some rocky moments in our relationship but now we’re working things out, we’re good again and yes, we’re still together,” she declared.
In fact, the two of them will be together in Phoebe’s next project. She revealed that the former Juan Direction mainstay has also several projects lined up for himself. The half-British actor has also improved his Tagalog which means he can now accept more acting gigs.
Phoebe herself is also more busy these days as she’s also in the cast of PTV4′s part gag, part political satire series, “Bara Bara! Anything Goes”. She said the show allows her to loosen up and bare another side of her.
As for her sexy image, the actress acknowledges that, like Cristine Reyes, to whom she is most often compared with, the career path she decided to take is not for everyone.
“I consulted Ma’m Veronique (del Rosario) of Viva and she said that sexy roles are limited because not everyone can do it and also because of our conservative society and culture. But as long as my personal life is intact, I can do these roles as my personality will not be judged.”
“Gayuma” will have its gala night on October 23 at Gateway Cineplex 2, 9:00 PM. It’s succeeding schedules are as follows: October 24, Trinoma Cinema 1, 8:30 PM; October 25, Gateway Cineplex 1, 8:30 PM; October 26, Robinson Galleria Cinema 7, 2:50 PM; October 29, Robinsons Galleria Cinema 7, 8:30 PM; and October 31, Gateway Cineplex 1, 7:50 PM.
