An Aspiring Model at 15: Will Her Age Come Between Her and a Calvin Klein Ad?
Raina Hamner, 15 years old, wants to model for Calvin Klein.
Until recently, her chances looked great: She had been on the cover of Italian Glamour, posed in Harper’s Bazaar and been photographed by Steven Meisel, who has shot some Calvin Klein campaigns. She even made the short list for two Calvin Klein ads.
But after Mr. Klein’s recent tangle with the Federal Bureau of Investigation over his use of young models in allegedly provocative advertising, Raina may have to postpone her dream.
While there have always been teenage models, their age has usually been masked by makeup and clothes. The Calvin Klein campaign, with its obviously young models in suggestive poses, brought age to people’s attention. “It was the portrayal of youth that was part of people’s rage,” says Katie Ford, chief executive of Ford Models Inc., the big New York agency that manages Raina. “I think obviously a line was crossed because it created such an uproar. That’s not a personal opinion, but it seems to be America’s opinion.”
The debate isn’t likely to spark momentous changes in the fashion industry, say Ms. Ford and editors at top fashion magazines. While advertisers may now think twice about their campaigns’ tones, most magazines and ad agencies want to know just one thing about a model: How does she look in front of a camera? “Klein went over the boundary of what ordinary people could deal with, but it won’t diminish the use of these young girls in the industry,” says Sara Foley Anderson, senior bookings editor at Harper’s Bazaar. Still, Raina has already received signals that her Calvin Klein dream will have to wait.
Yet for Raina, posing for Calvin Klein’s daring, hip ads would be a pinnacle of sorts. The controversy doesn’t bother her. Such pictures “may seem a little weird from an adult point of view, like here’s this kid, and maybe she doesn’t know someone is taking a picture of her underwear or something,” she says. “But I know the models in the Calvin Klein ads, and they don’t care. To us, it’s acting.” Raina‘s extensive portfolio already includes a picture of her in underwear, halter top and shackles.
Raina‘s poses aren’t unusual in a business where young people grow up fast. At its best, modeling imbues them with self-confidence and business sense, and offers them a shot at fame and fortune. At its worst, Ms. Ford says, modeling can throw girls into a lifestyle they aren’t ready for: drugs, club-hopping, sleeping with photographers for jobs _ not to mention more subtle changes, like alienating young models from their peers. Raina already can earn $4,000 a day, at an age when her friends still getc.lowances.
Raina is only vaguely aware of these differences, and in many ways she is an ordinary teenager. She lives with her parents and sister in the TriBeCa neighborhood of Manhattan. Her parents insist on eating dinner as a family and spending weekends at their house in the Catskill Mountains. They make certain Raina, who is an honors student, is home by 10 p.m. on weeknights and check her homework.
Raina is 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 107 pounds and loves extra-thick chocolate milkshakes. She doesn’t watch what she eats but does sit-ups and crunches in her room at night; after all, a few extra pounds could hurt her career.
This year, Raina transferred to Saint Ann’s School, a private school in Brooklyn, from a public school in part because Saint Ann’s builds in free time during the school day. While classmates eat lunch or hang out, Raina changes clothes in her father’s car on the way to “go-sees” _ appointments with magazine editors and photographers in Manhattan. Her father waits for her there and drives her back to school. “We don’t let her see a photographer by herself that we don’t know,” says Richard Hamner, an architect.
