Yetide Badaki (T&A&B) in American Gods [S1E1]
Watching the American Gods premiere episode and particularly the first seven minutes, I remembered a review by Leonard Maltin of 1991 flick K-2: “Film never tops its first fifteen minutes, which are spellbinding.”
How I wish American Gods was all about barbaric Norsemen taking on the brutal Native Indians presented in a mystical and fantastical manner. With almost zero dialogues and voice over narration to depict the tale, it would have been a poetic and awe-inspiring accomplishment. An anthology about America, each season would be devoted to a particular era in history that contributed and transformed an untamed land into the greatest country on Earth.
Alas, AG is based on series of novels by Neil Gaiman. I’ve always confused Gaiman with Brian Lumley. Don’t know why and to be honest, I don’t really care. I’ve never read a single novel by the duo. Give me David Gemmell anytime over those two!
I will wait for few more episodes before deciding if AG was for me. If it was like the first episode after the introduction of Shadow Moon (with obvious exception of Yetide Badaki spectacular sex scene), I’d probably ditch the show in terms of giving all my focus to it and instead, cap the nude and eye-catching scenes. After all, I wasn’t a fan of show runner Bryan Fuller‘s Hannibal and AG looks to be a series styled after the former. Props to Bryan for delivering another dazzling visual feast with superb cinematography by Jo Willems.
Ricky Whittle continues the long line of lame and uninspiring male foreign talents cast as the lead. For every Hugh Laurie, there seems to be handful of these dull actors somehow fortunate enough to land the main role. They don’t do much than what’s required of them by the director and script. As someone noted, British actors are lost without a script and ad-libbing is out of question. Maybe Ricky will come into his own as the show progresses.
There are tough, uncompromising Jews and then there’s Jews pretending to be tough like Pablo Schreiber. I like Schreiber. He seems to be on a recent run of playing toughies. He got the height and frame for it but not the demeanor or the menacing presence, that don’t-fuck-with-me persona.
Betty Gilpin in a scenery chewing performance. Nothing outrageous ala Verhoeven in the scene at the cemetery. I was hoping a grieving Audrey slipped off her dress in a showstopping full frontal as she attempts to seduce her BFF husband.
As a perv, the episode belonged to Yetide. What an incredible onscreen nude debut (she claimed to have gone naked on stage) in a lengthy segment that thankfully, never revolts at its most climatic moment. It was rendered in a subtle manner and in process, never diluting the sex and nudity. Joel, you lucky fuck! He even got a quick nibble of Yetide nip which was (I think) digitally darkened.
