Masters of Sex Turns Up the Heat in Season 2: Where We Left Off and What’s Next
Masters of Sex is back to give you satisfaction.
After last season’s finale interruptus, Showtime’s period drama returnsSunday at 10/9c to finish what Bill Masters (Michael Sheen) started. The doctor had just declared to his sex research partner Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) that she is the one thing he cannot live without.
Lizzy Caplan (“Masters Of Sex”)
Dr. William Masters
Where we left off: Besides making his more tender feelings known, Bill also lost his job after his sex research presentation created a scandal at the hospital.
What’s next: Not only will Bill get another job, but the study will be back on, thanks to an enthusiastic contact. He will also come to an understanding of sorts with Ginny, which will take their research out of the lab, and we’ll learn more about his father and brother.
Virginia “Ginny” Johnson
Where we left off: The single mom had two men making bold statements: Bill Masters declared his feelings and also included her name on the sex study, while Dr. Ethan Haas (Nicholas D’Agosto) proposed marriage.
What’s next: Historical spoiler alert! Ginny stays with the study and Bill, and their relationship progresses in an unusual way. Newly financially strapped, she will attempt to gain credibility, and some extra cash, after her possible filmed participation in the study ruined her reputation.
Dr. Ethan Haas
Where we left off: The doctor moved to California for a career opportunity and proposed to Ginny.
What’s next: He’s still in California and eager for Ginny to join him. His influence will also be felt in an acrimonious interaction at the hospital.
Libby Masters (Caitlin Fitzgerald)
Where we left off: Bill Masters’ neglected wife finally gave birth after many disappointments and fertility treatments.
What’s next: She hopes that their infant son will bridge the emotional gap in her marriage, but a new face will make her question her mothering instincts.
Dr. Barton Scully (Beau Bridges)
Where we left off: The provost was determined to undergo electroshock therapy in an attempt to “cure” himself of homosexuality.
What’s next: Barton will go to extreme measures to treat himself as his wife Margaret (Allison Janney) and daughter Vivian (Rose McIver) will get pulled into his struggle.
Dr. Austin Langham (Teddy Sears)
Where we left off: The randy doctor had broken Margaret Scully’s heart when their affair got too serious, and Austin learned that he had inavertently fathered a child with one of the sex study participants (but anonymity protected him from claiming parentage).
What’s next: Austin’s habitual philandering finally catches up to him and creates a major change in his life.
Dr. Lillian DePaul (Julianne Nicholson)
Where we left off: The doctor revealed that her commitment to making pap smears part of a regular practice at hospitals is inspired by having personally contracted cervical cancer.
Julianne Nicholson (“Masters Of Sex”)
What’s next: Lillian will lean on Ginny for help to continue her pap smear campaign, which will involve getting over her rather rusty social and speaking skills. A surprising development, however, starts to derail her efforts.
Summer TV eye candy
Bettie DiMello (Annaleigh Ashford)
Where we left off: The former prostitute attempted to reverse her tubal ligation in the hopes of giving her new husband Gene (Greg Grunberg) a child, but an inflammation of her fallopian tubes renders her unable to have children.
What’s next: Hubby Gene is still clueless about his wife’s inability to have kids and even goes to great lengths to get a doctor who can give her fertility treatments. Betty will also stick her nose into one of Bill’s cases that will reveal secrets about her upbringing.
Where we left off: The hospital secretary participated in the sex study and was charmed by Lester (Kevin Christy), the audio visual geek who said, “I think your vaginal walls are beautiful,” before kissing her.
What’s next: Apparently, the odd couple is still together and have big dreams that could involve a huge life upheaval.
The New Faces
Coral (Keke Palmer)
Who is she? In the wake of Bill’s mother leaving, the Masters will hire Coral as a young nanny who has a lot of practical skills but is still very naive.
Barbara Sanderson (Betsy Brandt)
Who is she? The Breaking Bad alum will play Bill’s new secretary, which obviously means that he’s found a new job. But will she anticipate his needs as well as Ginny does?
Hottest celebrity beach bodies
Dr. Doug Greathouse (Danny Huston)
Who is he? The privileged head of a hospital has to play ball when it comes to his rich and influential donors, but is also very interested in the findings in Masters’ study.
Dr. Hendricks (Courtney B. Vance)
Who is he? The good doctor is the head of an African-American St. Louis hospital who seeks integration. Hmm, could this be where Libby Masters gave birth?
Helen (Sarah Silverman)
Who is she? So far, that name is all we have to go by, so your guess is as good as ours. Looking at history, there was an Austrian-born sex therapist named Helen Singer Kaplan who founded the first clinic in the United States for sexual disorders. She also encouraged people to enjoy having sex as much as possible. That sounds like a good fit for this series.
