Study – Sex Once a Week Is Ideal for Happiness. Having sex more than once a week won’t make you any happier
Regular sex is key to a happy romantic life. But, how much is too much? Contrary to a common belief that having lots of sex makes couples happier, a new study suggests that just once-a-week sex is good enough to lead a happy married life.

It is not startling that there is a correlation between how often a person has sex and how happy they are, but we might be surprised by how much sex is just right for most couples. Results from a new study published in the journal Social Psychology and Personality Science, found that for long-term couples, once-a-week sex appears to be the perfect number for long-term couples.

The research team not only analyzed couples’ happiness through sex, but also compared it with their earnings to examine whether money can influence people’s general happiness.
After analyzing the data, the team found that among the married couple or those in relationships, more sex definitely correlated with higher levels of happiness.

However, when they actually got down to find out if there’s an upper limit to improving sexual life through sexual proliferation, they were a little surprised to find that about once a week sex was statistically significant for married people and for those in a relationship.

“This showed a linear association between sex and happiness up to a frequency of once a week, but at higher frequencies there is no longer an association,” said Amy Muise, a social psychologist at the University of Toronto Mississauga and the lead author of the study. “Therefore it is not necessary, on average, for couples to aim to engage in sex as frequently as possible.”

Muise and her team’s findings are based on three different studies. Firstly, they drew data from a vast 23-year study of 25,000 Americans. This study showed that more sex is correlated with more happiness, but surprisingly the happiness maxed out when couples had sex about once a week.
In the second study, Muise and her colleagues looked at data of 335 people who indeed tended to be happier as frequency of sex increased. To make their findings more interesting the researchers asked the participants what makes them happier, having more sex or having more money.

Interestingly, the respondents believed getting paid more could make them happier than having more sex. However, they would pick once-a-week sex over money.

The third 14-year study included data from 2,400 married couples that looked at happiness, sex and relationship satisfaction. Once again, the researchers found that sex is associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction happiness, but this happiness seemed to max out only when couples had sex only about once a week.

However, Muise and colleagues believe their study needs more exploration and the take-home message from their study is that “couples do not need to aim to engage in sex as frequently as possible but instead aim to maintain a connection with their partner.”

The startling findings were presented in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science on November 18th.
