Sulli & Kim Soo Hyun’s movie is a ‘Real’ failure at the box office
Sulli and Kim Soo Hyun’s action noir film ‘Real’ didn’t live up to the hype and has been a major disappointment at the box office, attracting less than 500,000 admissions to date.
According to numbers from the Korean Film Committee on July 19, ‘Real’ gained just 1,578 admissions on July 18 and the film has a total admissions number of 466,331.
The number of theaters playing ‘Real’ has dwindled. It is currently screening in a total of 58 locations as opposed to the 970 screenings on opening day. There is no doubt the movie has clearly flopped at the box office after nearly 4 weeks. In comparison, the movie ‘Anarchist from Colony’ which opened on the same day as ‘Real’ on June 28, has attracted an admissions number of more than 2.2 million viewers to date.
Despite a hefty production budget of 11.5 Billion KRW (~$11 million), ‘Real’ failed to reach the break-even point of 3 million admissions. Currently, it has grossed around $3 million at the box office, which isn’t even 1/6 of the amount it was expected to earn. As a result, ‘Real’ has clearly been a disappointment, going down as one of the worst movies in 2017.
‘Real’ also received funding from China’s Alibaba Pictures for the film and even had the big-star name of Kim Soo Hyun but it was unable to deliver a satisfying story to movie-goers.
Meanwhile, a potential release in China is still pending following the strict THAAD regulations.
